Women's Basketball Fends Off Brescia in Saturday Night Scuffle

LIMA, OH - UNOH continued their unblemished start to the season Saturday night holding off a tough Brescia team for a 60-55 win.

The Racers opened up a quick ten-point lead to start the game and did enough defensively to hold the Bearcats at bay carrying a 19-12 lead after one. The momentum swung heavily in the second quarter as Brescia scored the first seven points and seven of the final nine to outscore UNOH 22-11 in the frame and take a 34-30 advantage at halftime.

The two teams matched points to start the third with the Bearcats still up four, 39-35, with 6:43 left in the quarter. The Racer defense locked down and held Brescia without another bucket the rest of the period going back up five heading into the final frame.

That cushion remained most of the quarter before Brescia shaved it back to just two points with 13 seconds left to play. Hitting three of four free throw attempts at the end were enough to ice away game improving the Racers to 5-0.

The three Racer guards produced all but six of the team's points led by Alysia Lawson's 23. Olivia Thompson scored a season high 19 followed by twelve for Brooke Asher. Each of the three pulled in seven rebounds combining for seven steals and four assists. It was a tough night in the offensive paint for the two freshman forwards, Sanaiiya Gray and Lori Huffman, going just 2-19 from the field, but they did exceptional work on the defensive end while managing to combine for 15 rebounds and two blocks on the night.

"I thought our attention to detail was really good tonight," stated head coach Matt Vavro after the game. "While we didn't shoot the ball well, we defended our tails off to fend off a really good Brescia team. We really stuck together while facing adversity and found a way to win."

UNOH will have ten days off before they face their toughest adversity so far this season opening conference play at home November 19 against four-time defending WHAC Champion No. 17 Indiana Tech.
