Softball Season Ends on Second Day of WHAC Tournament

LIVONIA, MI - UNOH softball saw the 2026 season come to a close after a pair of losses on day two of the WHAC Tournament Saturday. The Racers fell to the top-seeded No. 3 Madonna Crusaders, 5-3, in the first game of the day bumping them down to the losers side of the bracket. There they met Cornerstone for the second time in two days but unlike the first UNOH couldn't get past the Golden Eagles losing 12-9 and ending the year with a record of 27-22.

The loss to Madonna was essentially determined in their first at bat of the game where the Crusaders turned five hits into four runs that would end up being enough to win the game. Morgan Piotrovsky drove in the first Racer run with a double in the third and eventually scored the second herself after an error allowed her to come home from third with two outs. Madonna answered right back in their fifth run in the home half of the inning putting them up 5-2 after three.

Neither team threatened again until Mackenzie Brandt crushed her first career homer in the top of the sixth. That hit would be the final one of the game for the Racers giving them their first post season loss to Madonna since 2021.

Runs were on the menu in the subsequent elimination game with at least one scored in every inning played. Cornerstone took the lead first with two runs in their first trip to the plate, but the lead was short-lived with UNOH jumping out in front in the bottom half of the frame. Tayler Braun opened with a tripled before being brought home by a Brenna Cobb double on the very next pitch. A walk and a pair of sac bunts added a second before an error scored the third and put the Racers up 3-2. The Golden Eagles scored a single run in the second and third innings adding two in the fourth to take control a final time 6-3.

Cobb drove in her second run of the game in the home fourth but it was quickly answered by four more Cornerstone scores over the next two frames that expanded the lead to 10-4. UNOH kept fighting to stay alive with doubles by Lanie Wooten and Hailee Edgell combining with a Brenna Cobb triple that helped create a four-run sixth. The chance for a comeback was haulted abruptliy in the Golden Eagle bats that stayed hot in their final trip hanging two more insurance runs that made it a four run game. A fielder's choice scored the final run of the season for the Racers as it came to a close with the loss.

Tayler Braun had a great day at the dish going 5-9 with two triples while driving in two runs and scoring twice. Two of three hits for Brenna Cobb also went for extra bases bringing in three runs and scoring three times over the two games.

Lanie Wooten took both losses in the circle ending her sophomore season at 14-15. Wooten tossed 10.2 innings over the two games with 13 runs on 19 hits, ten earned while striking out three and walking one.
