Softball Hangs Tough Against NCAA DI Detroit Mercy

DETROIT, MI - For the first time in program history, UNOH softball crossed over the collegiate line to face a NCAA Division I program Monday afternoon. The Racers battled tough against Detroit Mercy behind a strong performance from their sophomore pitcher, but two unearned runs proved costly in a tight 3-1 loss. Originally scheduled as a doubleheader, the nightcap was officially called off following the conclusion of game one due to deteriorating weather conditions.

The two teams produced just one hit over the first two and a half innings as UNOH pitcher Lanie Wooten retired the first six batters in order. A lead off single for the Titans in the home third resulted in the first run of the game after a couple stolen bases and a fielding error brought her home. They threatened again in the fourth putting runners on second and third with one out, but the Racer defense came up big to shut down the scoring opportunity.

A second error on the lead off batter in the fifth cost the eventual winning run after three of the Titans' six total hits followed to put them up 2-0 after five. Detroit Mercy added an insurance run in the bottom of a sixth off a solo home run that ended up being their only earned run of the game. UNOH finally broke through in their final at bat as Cecilia Campball went yard for the third time this season but it was all they could muster in the loss.

Mackenzie Brandt doubled in the second and Makenna Goch hit a single in the seventh to account for the team's other two hits in the game. Lanie Wooten (10-11) took the loss despite a stout display in the circle. The sophomore slinger gave up six hits over six innings striking out five without allowing a free pass.

UNOH will get back into conference play on Wednesday, April 8, with a doubleheader at Defiance followed by four straight at home against No. 2 Madonna and UM-Dearborn this weekend.
