SOUTHFIELD, MI - UNOH softball officially began their trek to defend last season's WHAC Tournament Championship on the opening day of conference play on Saturday. The day started well with Lanie Wooten shutting down Lawrence Tech in a 5-0 game one victory, but the second game went the other way with the Blue Devils swiping the win, 5-2.
Wooten (6-8) scattered five hits over her seven innings with four strikeouts and five walks. It is her second complete game shutout of the season and sixth of her career. Hailee Edgell and Morgan Piotrovsky each drove in a run in the team's first at bat and Cecilia Campbell made it three in the third. The final two runs came off the bat of Athena Schwartz who ripped her first career double with bases loaded and two outs in the fifth.
UNOH was held to just one base runner through the first four innings of game two before finally breaking through thanks to an error. The single run tied the game heading into the bottom of the fifth, but a Blue Devil grand slam gave the lead back for good. A one-out triple from Dominique Baker and a sac bunt by Hailee Edgell worked one across the plate in the sixth but it would be the last.
Chloe Scott (4-2) took over from starter Karsyn McGlothen in the fifth and subsequently gave up what would be the game winning home run to take the loss. McGlothen went four and a third with three runs on five hits while Scott finished the final inning and two-thirds with two runs on four hits.
UNOH will be back in action tomorrow, March 22, with a neutral WHAC doubleheader against Rochester Christian that will be played at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan.
