MELBOURNE, FL - Runs were at a premium Monday during softball's fifth of six days in Florida, but UNOH still managed to split a pair of one-run contests topping Johnson 2-1 before losing with a walk-off error to Cottey, 3-2.
Despite nine total hits in game one, all three runs camed across unearned with the Royals scoring in the second and the Racers putting up two in the third. A walk and an error began the first scoring frame of the day followed by a sacrifice fly that gave Johnson an early 1-0 lead. UNOH was able to get going on their own with back-to-back one out singles, but a costly Johnson error opened the door.
Tayler Braun scored from second on the miscue and Kimberly Hernandez drove in the second with a soft ground ball to first putting the Racers up 2-1 after three. The two pitchers took control and allowed just one base runner to get past second base over the final four innings as UNOH held on for the win.
Braun and Dominique Baker were responsible for the only two hits of the game with Hernandez claiming the team's long RBI despite going 0-3 at the plate.
Chloe Scott (4-0) earned her fourth straight complete game win with seven hits and two walks allowed.
The Racers fell behind again in game two with three Comet hits turning into two runs in the second, but were able to close the game with a single run in both the third and the fifth. Dominque Baker went up the middle to score Brenna Cobb and Susan Vokes tied the game with sacrifice fly that brought in Cobb a second time.
UNOH had a chance to steal the win in the top of the seventh, but after working runners to second and third with no outs, the next three batters went down in order handing the opportunity back to Cottey. After a lead off single, a bunt intended to move the runner into scoring position resulted in a Racer error that brought her all the way around from first for a walk off, sacrifice bunt error.
Lanie Wooten (5-8) took the loss after three runs on nine hits, two earned, with two strikeouts and a walk.
UNOH will wrap up their trip to Florida on Tuesday with a rematch against Cottey followed by a showdown with No. 10 Southeastern.
