MELBOURNE, FL - UNOH softball had a tough third day in Florida taking losses to Bellevue and St. Francis (IL) on Friday. The Racers went up 4-1 early in game one but surrendered a nine-spot in the third inning that flipped the result to the Bruins 10-5. Game two started badly with the Saints scoring seven times in their first two at bats while the UNOH offense sputtered giving them back-to-back losses for the first time since opening day.
The first four Racer runs of the day came with two outs starting with a Hailee Edgell triple in the first followed by a two-run shot from Kimberly Hernandez in the third. The early excitement was nulified quickly as three defensive errors plagued UNOH in the bottom of that inning. Bellevue took advantage of the miscues and made it hurt even more with a couple of doubles en route to a nine-run frame and a 10-4 lead.
The next three innings produced just three total hits between the teams giving the Racers just one more chance to get back in the game. Olive Staal ripped a lead off double to left but back-to-back ground outs made any chance of a comeback unlikely. Staal managed to get across the plate and Tayler Braun kept the inning alive with a two-out single, but that would be the end of the effort snapping the Racers' three-game win streak.
Kimberly Hernandez was the brightest light on the offensive side going 2-2 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Tayler Braun was the only other Racer with multiple hits finishing 2-4 to keep her team leading hit streak alive.
As tough as the first game was, things got even tougher in game two as UNOH managed just two hits in an 11-0 loss to St. Francis in five. Hailee Edgell and Amijah Poole were responsible for the only two base knocks in the second and fourth innings, respectively. Edgell took over the team hit streak at eight games after Tayler Braun saw hers come to an end at 16, just one away from the all-time program record (Erin Glavin - 2015).
Lanie Wooten (5-7) took both losses after a difficult day in the circle. Over just four total innings, Wooten allowed 14 runs, 12 earned, on nine hits with four walks and only two strike outs. Allison Feuerbacher tossed the backend of both games with two runs allowed on five hits over four innings of relief.
UNOH will look to rebound on day four of the Space Coast Spring Games on Saturday. The Racers begin with a matchup against USCAA Bloomfield at 10:00 AM followed by Fisher College at 2:30 PM.
