Softball Claims Pair of Victories on Day Two at SCSG

MELBOURNE, FL - UNOH softball picked up two wins on their second day in Florida shutting down Olivet Nazarene 5-0 in game one and ending the day with a 4-1 win over Trinity Christian in game two.

All five Racer runs came in the fifth inning of game one with three singles and a couple errors doing the damage. Brenna Cobb was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and was followed by a Tayler Braun single to center that get the offense started. A sacrifice bunt from Lanie Wooten moved both the runners into scoring position before Susan Vokes forced an error by the pitcher that scored them both.

Kimberly Hernandez kept the momentum going with another single up the left side that brought in a third with a second error responsible for the fourth. Dominique Baker also singled through the left side of the infield with two outs to cap a five run inning for what would be the only offense of the day. The Tigers only threatened twice working a runner to third in both the first and fifth innings but were denied each time.

Lanie Wooten (5-5) pulled even on the year with her first complete game shutout scattering eight hits over seven innings with one strike out and one walk.

UNOH scored a pair of runs in each of their first and second trips to the plate in game two to make it 21 straight innings without trailing and 31 of the last 35. The Racers singled, doubled and tripled in their first at bat to take an early 2-0 lead. An error started off the home second with an Athena Schwartz reaching on a bunt that moved the runner to third. Tayler Braun hit a sacrifice fly to score the first of the frame followed by Dominique Baker who ripped hit a liner to right that brought in the second. 

Karsyn McGlothen (3-2) controlled the circle from start to finish and faced just two more than the mininum through six innings with just four total base runners before the Trolls finally broke through with two outs in their final at bat. McGlothen's final line showed one run on five hits with two strike outs and a walk through seven innings.

Tayler Braun recorded just one hit in each game but it was enough to extend her hitting streak to 15 games, the second longest in program history (17 - Erin Glavin) with just two strike outs in 64 at bats this season. Susan Vokes, the team's leader in batting average (.528) and RBI (13), stayed hot on Braun's heals after going 3-7 with two RBI over the two games to give her a 13 game hit streak. Dominique Baker also drove in two going 3-5 at the dish while Kimberly Hernandez finished 2-7 to give her at least one hit in eight straight games.

Junior Paige Becker had one of the best defensive days of her career recording 22 putouts and five assists on 27 chances while helping turn three double plays. Brenna Cobb also finished perfect defensively with seven putouts and seven assists on 14 total chances with two double plays turned.

Day three in Florida will begin early again with a 10:00 AM first pitch against Bellevue in game one followed by St. Francis (IL) at 2:30 in game two.
