Softball Splits Doubleheader at Union

BARBOURVILLE, KY - After splitting their home opening doubleheader on Saturday, UNOH softball headed back to Kentucky on Wednesday to take on Union Commonwealth twice. The Bulldogs held off a late Racer comeback to win game one 9-7, but UNOH rallied in the nightcap to take game two, 4-1.

The Racers fell behind early in game one surrendering five runs in the home second due to a couple costly errors. After getting one back in the third, another error gave the run right back to make it 6-1 after three. Union returned the favor in the fourth aiding two runs for UNOH thanks to two errors of their own.

The Bulldogs kept adding on offensively with one in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth to pull away 9-3 heading into the final frame. Kimberly Hernandez stepped up with the bases loaded and brought in all three with a ripped single to left field that was mishandled. Morgan Piotrovsky drove in the fourth run of the inning but Union quickly closed the door on the comeback.

Kimberly Hernandez led the team with her three RBI while Tayler Braun, Susan Vokes, and Hailee Edgell all logged a multi-hit game.

Lanie Wooten (4-4) worked four innings in the losing effort allowing nine runs on eight hits, five earned, with three strike outs and two walks. Chloe Scott worked a clean fifth and Allison Feuerbacher finished the sixth with one hit.

Errors continued to headline the day with all four Racer runs coming across unearned in game two. With two outs in the top of the third, the first Bulldog error kept the inning alive for UNOH and cost the first run of the game. Hailee Edgell came up next and made the defense pay blasting her second home run of the year that scored three runs and put her team up 4-0.

Union managed to get one run back after pairing a couple singles in the bottom of the frame but it would be the last one of the day. The Racers got a runner to second in the fourth and the fifth while the Bulldogs also reached third in the fifth but they were stranded each time giving the teams a split of the day.

Edgell ended the game 2-3 with her three RBI and Kimberly Hernandez joined her as the only two with multiple hits finishing 2-4 at the dish. Tayler Braun recorded just one hit but it came in the form of her first double of the year that extended her team high hitting streak to eleven games.

In her first collegiate start, Chloe Scott (1-0) went the distance allowing one run on five hits with five strike outs and just one walk.

UNOH will have just a one day turnaround before they head to Upland, Indiana to face Taylor on Friday, March 6. First pitch for the evening doubleheader is scheduled for 5:00 PM and will be the final two contests before the Racers head to Florida for twelve games in seven days.
