Men's Golf Makes Strong Showing at Music City Collegiate
DICKSON, TN - UNOH men's golf competed in the loaded 19-team field at the Music City Collegiate Monday and Tuesday finishing third behind only No. 1 Lindsey Wilson and No. 4 Dalton State.
The Racers battled through difficult conditions to earn the third best 36-hole tournament score in program history behind a powerful performance by Jose Luis Vargas.
A two-hour weather delay hindered play in round one Monday keeping the tournament from completing round two the same day. UNOH sat a 15-under and trailed No. 4 Dalton State by one stroke early in the second round when the event was called for the day. Day two saw the teams fight just to finish round two before the third was officially cancelled.
When everything sorted out, the Racers sat in third place behind only Dalton State and No. 1 Lindsey Wilson after rounds of 285 and 280 gave them an 11-under 565.
The tournament field also included No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan, No. 14 Marian, No. 21 Point, No. 22 Campbellsville as well as Cumberland, Cumberlands and Tennessee Wesleyan who are all receiving votes in the NAIA coaches' poll.
Vargas led the way with a 6-under 138 carding rounds of 71 and 67 to finish in a tie for second place. Oliver Rogers also stayed under par in both rounds shooting 70 and 71 to finished tied for 13th with a 3-under 141. Guillermo Garron shot a 1-under opening round followed by even-par in round two for a 143 total. Oscar Lind was two strokes back from him with a 145 while Luke S. Turner rounded out the team scoring with a 146 carding a round of 76 and a 2-under 70.
UNOH will head back to Tennessee for their final event of the fall when they take on The Links at Kahite Golf Club in the Bojangles Invitational October 18-19.
