LIMA, OH - UNOH began the new season in friendly territory Friday night but saw Great Lakes Christian rally in the second half to steal a 74-70 win on opening night.
The Racers jumped out to an early 14-point lead and continued to stay in front throughout the entire first half holding a 40-34 advantage at the break. UNOH pushed the lead back up to nine in the first two minutes of the second, but the Crusaders refused to back down rattling off a 10-1 run over the next three minutes to tie the game with 15:11 to play.
The two teams traded blows over the next five minutes before Great Lakes Christian worked their way in front for the first time all night at the 9:51 mark. The Racers tied the game back up at 61-61 but the Crusaders never surrendered the lead again finishing off the 4-point victory.
The team numbers were pretty even across the board as both shot under 40% from the field with struggles from the charity stripe combining for just 59% in the game. UNOH turned the ball over 19 times while the Crusaders coughed it up 18 times but the biggest difference came on the glass as Great Lakes Christian pulled down 49 rebounds to 42 for the Racers.
After missing all of last season due to injury, Kahlil Davis returned to the hardwood in style knocking down 7-18 (38%) attempts from the field with four three-pointers to lead all scorers with 21 points. Transfer Corey Chesley added 19 in his UNOH debut on 67% shooting. Grant Pikkaart chipped in eleven points while Ajani Washington finished two points short of a double-double scoring eight and grabbing ten boards.
UNOH will have a chance to bounce back tomorrow when they host Bryant & Stratton-Ohio at 8:00 PM immediately following a neutral site matchup between Wright State-Lake and Great Lakes Christian.
