UNOH Loses Five-Set Battle at Shawnee State
PORTSMOUTH, OH - UNOH volleyball went back-and-forth with Shawnee State Saturday afternoon in a hard-fought contest before the Bears finally got the best of them in the fifth set to take the win 3-2.
The Racers controlled the first game leading almost start to finish to win 25-18. Shawnee State responded in set two and took an early lead before UNOH fought back to go up 17-16 after a 7-2 run. Nine of the last twelve points were scored by the Bears as the finished off the game 25-20. They carried that momentum into set three leading wire-to-wire for a 25-14 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Racers stood tall and returned the favor in the fourth game of the day winning 25-15 without trailing to force a decisive fifth set. The teams countered each other step-for-step before landing at 13-13, but after fighting off the first match point UNOH gave up the final two to drop the set 16-14 and the match 3-2.
Freshman Grace Isakson paced the Racers with 13 points all coming from her 13 kills. Abigail Martin finished with 12.5 points putting down twelve kills with one block assist and adding 15 digs for her first double-double of the season. Shamyria DuBose scored 11.5 points coming off eight kills, two solo blocks and a block assist.
Paige Hoodlebrink led UNOH with 24 assists while also earning eight digs, three kills, three service aces and one assisted block. Savanna Reed picked up her third double-double of the season logging 17 assists and ten digs.
Alli Lopez led defensively with 19 digs, a season high, followed by Riley Treece with 18.
UNOH will now get back into conference play with three straight home matches beginning with Lourdes on Wednesday, September 10 followed by (RV) Indiana Tech and Siena Heights.
