Ripolles Wins ITA Midwest Regional Singles Championship

MARION, IN - The 2023 ITA NAIA Midwest Regional took place September 27-30 at Indiana Wesleyan. Northwestern Ohio's Alizee Ripolles became the first Racer to win the women's regional title since 2016 while Jelena Lopicic and Agathe Vaillant fell in the semifinals of the doubles tournament.

 

Singles

Ripolles was the No. 3 seed in the 64 player field winning six matchups to win the regional title and qualify for the 2023 ITA Cup beginning October 12 in Rome, Georgia.

  • Round of 32 | def. Kyla Heckaman (Bethel) | Default
  • Round of 16 | def. Ariadne Kokoula (Bethel) | 6-1, 6-0
  • Quarterfinal | def. Maria Way (Indiana Wesleyan) | 6-4, 6-3
  • Semifinal | def. Agathe Vaillant (UNOH) | 6-1, 6-4
  • Final | def. No. 4 Jimena Ramirez (Grace) | 6-4, 6-3

Agathe Vaillant had a tough path through the No. 15, No. 2, and No. 10 players, beating all three before seeing her tournament run come to an end against teammate, and eventual champion, Alizee Ripolles in the semifinals.

  • Round of 32 | def. No. 15 Sozfia Kallai (Goshen) | 6-4, 6-2
  • Round of 16 | def. No. 2 Kaavya Palani (Bethel) | 7-6 (2), 6-3
  • Quarterfinal | def. No. 10 Maria Trenbach (Oakland City) | 1-6, 6-3, 10-4
  • Semifinal | lost to No. 3 Alizee Ripolles (UNOH) | 6-1, 6-4

Munisa Ashurbekova played as the No. 5 seed losing in a tight battle in the round of 16.

  • Round of 64 | def. Esther Bolon (Huntington) | 6-0, 6-0
  • Round of 32 | def. Olivia Creech (Spring Arbor) | 6-3, 6-2
  • Round of 16 | lost to Blanka Bodo (Goshen) | 1-6, 6-4, 10-8

As the No. 7 seed, Ana Cetina won her first matchup and blanked her opponent in the round of 32 before getting knocked out in the round of 16.

  • Round of 32 | def. Aurora Domingo (Indiana Tech) | 6-0, 6-0
  • Round of 16 | lost to No. 10 Maria Trenbach (Oakland City) | 2-6, 6-1, 10-3

Neo Mafuyeka won her round of 64 matchup before losing in the round of 32.

  • Round of 64 | def. Tiana Sparks (Oakland City) | 6-1, 6-3
  • Round of 32 | lost to Ariadni Kokoula (Bethel) | 6-4, 6-0

Jelena Lopicic won her round of 64 matchup falling in the round of 32 to the No. 1 overall seed. 

  • Round of 64 | def. Chloe Schmidt (IU-Kokomo) | 6-2, 6-2
  • Round of 32 | lost to No. 1 Sofia Munoz (Indiana Wesleyan) | 6-0, 6-2

 

Doubles

Jelena Lopicic and Agathe Vaillant teamed up to defeat the No. 7 and No. 2 ranked doubles before falling in a close semifinal match.

  • Round of 16 | def. No. 7 Szilvi Ferenczy/Kyla Heckaman (Bethel) | 8-6
  • Quarterfinal | def. No. 2 Munisa Ashurbekova/Alizee Ripolles (UNOH) | 8-6
  • Semifinal | lost to Kaavya Palani/Ariadne Kokoula (Bethel) | 9-8 (4)

Alizee Ripolles joined Munisa Ashurbekova as the No. 2 doubles but saw their tournament end to teammates Jelena Lopicic and Agathe Vaillant in the quarterfinal.

  • Round of 16 | def. Ellie Snider/Maria Way (Indiana Wesleyan) | 8-6
  • Quarterfinal | lost to Jelena Lopicic/Agathe Vaillant (UNOH) | 8-6

 No. 5 seed Ana Cetina and Neo Mafuyeka also saw their day come to an end in the quarterfinal to the No. 4 seed after coasting through the first two rounds.
