MOBILE, AL - Thursday, UNOH men's tennis won a hard-fought battle over fifth-seed Westcliff, 4-2, to advance to the NAIA Semifinals Friday morning.
UNOH earned their first point after winning court one and two of doubles. Malik Omarkhanov and Martin Stanchev teamed up for the No. 1 win 6-1 with Lucas Perez and Sergio Conde winning No. 2, 6-3.
Sergio Conde and Martin Stanchev added two points for the Racers with wins in No. 1 and No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively. The Warriors won courts five and six setting up a potential win for either team on courts three and four, both playing in tie breaker sets. Mathieu Strauss lost set one 2-6 and won set two 7-5 on court four, but it was Malik Omarkhanov finishing off the match point on court three. After losing his first set 4-6, Omarkhanov won 6-4 and 7-6 in sets two and three to give UNOH the 4-2 win and send his Racers back to the NAIA Semifinals.
The win puts UNOH back in the fab four where they will face nine-time defending National Champion, and top seed, Georgia Gwinnett on Friday with a trip to the National Championship match on the line. The Racers will be hoping the third time is the charm in 2024 after being eliminated by the Grizzlies the past two seasons.
