Stanchev Named WHAC Player of the Week

Northwestern Ohio's Martin Stanchev has been named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Men's Tennis Player of the Week after an undefeated showing at the Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational hosted by the University of Toledo.

Stanchev took on opponents that spanned all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA boasting a 5-0 singles record and 1-0 in his lone doubles matchup of the weekend. His impressive performance started against NCAA Division I Toledo on Friday, September 22, as he took down Matias Olivera 6-1, 7-5 before wrapping up the day with a battle against NCAA Division III Chicago (2022 Quarterfinalists) taking a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 win over Arjun Asokumar. On Saturday, Stanchev continued his dominance putting away Jasper Schaadt of NCAA Division I Marquette with ease, 6-1, 6-2. The day ended with another comfortable victory for Stanchev as he disposed of Adam Singleton, representing NAIA No. 14 Holy Cross, 6-4, 6-1. Day three of the EVC Invite saw his only doubles match of the weekend go down to the wire but ending with a 7-5 win over Dom Spicer & Luke Laws of NCAA DII Wayne State alongside partner Malik Omarkhanov. Stanchev saw Spicer once more in a singles matchup that was also hard fought, with Stanchev squeaking out a 8-6 win to stay undefeated for the weekend.

Stanchev earned EVC Invite All-Tournament team honors to go along with his POTW Award. The award marks the first for Stanchev since April 12, 2022 and the first for UNOH in the 2023-24 campaign.
