Men's Golf Wins WHAC Fall Preview by 16 Strokes
AUGUSTA, MI - In the only conference event of the fall, UNOH men's golf ran away from the field winning the WHAC Fall Preview by 16 strokes over Lawrence Tech.
The Racers led the Blue Devils by 19 strokes after the first round shooting 289 and followed up with a 294 in round two for a 22 stroke lead after day one. Lawrence Tech managed to shave a handful of strokes off the lead in the final round but another 294 for UNOH kept their comfortable lead finishing with an 877 (+25) tournament total.
"I am very proud of the guys," stated head coach Eric West following the tournament. "We have been working hard and to see that payoff in tournament play feels great."
Jaiden Pass led wire-to-wire for his second individual medal in as many events. The sophomore from Johannesburg, South Africa opened the tournament with the lowest round of his career carding a 2-under 69 finshing the day even-par in round two to hold a three-stroke lead heading into the final round. Pass did enough to hold off his teammate Guillermo Garron on day two shooting 76 to take the tournament by one stroke with a 3-over 216 matching his career low for a 54-hole tournament.
"Jaiden [Pass] coming in with back-to-back medalist honors is very exciting for us," continued West. "He is a very talented player and has worked himself into the starting five these last two events and those have turned into his first and second collegiate wins. What a jump for our team and for his confidence."
Garron finished with a 4-over 217 after rounds of 71, 72 and 74 earning his third top five in three events this fall. Oliver Rogers picked up his second top five sitting in a tie for fourth with a 220 carding rounds of 70, 74 and 76.
Luke S. Turner played as an individual in the tournament but earned a top ten finish with rounds of 72, 73 and 76 for a 221 and a tie for sixth place. Freshman Kyle Sutton also played as an individual carding his lowest round of the year to start the tournament finishing with a total of 226 in the event.
The team scoring was rounded out by Jose Vargas and Oscar Lind who shot 230 and 231, respectively.
"With the season starting out with two wins, a second place finish as a team, and the medalist in all three tournaments we are excited for the rest of the year to see what we can accomplish," West added.
UNOH will have two more events before they conclude the fall portion of the season with both taking place in Tennessee. The Music City Collegiate will be up next on October 6-7 in Dickson, Tenn. followed by the Bojangles Invitational October 18-19 in Vonore, Tenn.
