UNOH Grabs Two Wins to Open MidSouth Clash
MILLINGTON, TN - UNOH baseball swept their first two games at the MidSouth Clash Saturday afternoon taking down Mission 3-2 and Culver-Stockton 11-0.
The Patriots scored both their runs in the bottom of the third stringing together three singles with two outs. Over the other six innings, Mission managed just four hits and were held with no more than one in any of their at bats. The Racers also put up all of their runs in one go taking advantage of some Patriot mistakes in the top of the fourth.
The frame began with an error that put a runner on before a single and a hit batter loaded the bases. Tyler Huff brought in the first with a wild pitch was responsible for the second. Kole Huffman drove in the eventual game winning run with a single to right still with no outs in the inning.
Despite the two quick spurts of offense, the pitching and defenses took over from that point forward as the two sides combined to allow just five total hits while striking out nine and turning three double plays over the final three and a half innings.
Daniel Healy (1-1) picked up his first win of the year after going five innings off the start with two runs allowed on seven hits while striking seven and walking two. Ryan Yingst and Carter Hicks combined for an inning of middle relief walking one and striking out one. Jordan Davis picked up the team's first save of the season finishing the final frame without a hit or a walk and one strike out.
UNOH rode another dazzling performance by senior right-hander Zach Cabell in game two while supporting him offensively with eleven runs. The Racers got started early at the dish aided by Wildcat mistakes that helped them bag three runs despite just one hit in their first at bat. A Tyler Huff solo shot in the fourth added another and Eric Brown brought in one more in the fifth to put UNOH up 5-0 after five.
The bottom fell out for Culver-Stockton in the sixth as the Racers more than doubled their lead with six more runs in the frame. The inning produced four singles, three walks, a sacrifice fly, a hit batter and a balk that blew the game open, 11-0, heading into the final inning. The Wildcats were put down in order in their final at bat to finish off the day with two UNOH wins.
Nine Racers recorded a hit in the game led by Cesar Grau who went 2-3 and finished the day 4-7 with one RBI. Eliomar Otero and Dylan Mroz each had two RBI in game two with Tyler Huff bringing in two over the two games.
Zach Cabell (2-1) threw his second consecutive complete game giving up just one hit and one walk over seven innings while striking out a career high nine batters.
UNOH will play two more games on the second day of the MidSouth Clash on Sunday beginning with No. 5 Tennessee Wesleyan and finishing the trip with Freed-Hardeman.
