The University of Northwestern Ohio Lady Racers finished their regular season with a record of 17-13. It was the first of many records set by the Lady Racers during the 2008-09 season. The Lady Racers added hardware to their season as the Freshman duo of Ashley Jackson and Amanda Francis received AMC honors. Ashley Jackson, Freshman from Defiance, OH, received First Team All-AMC Honors. Jackson was the only Freshman voted to either the First or Second Team of the AMC. Jackson also finished second in voting for the Freshman of the Year Award. Amanda Francis, Freshman from Sidney, OH, received Honorable Mention Honors from the AMC. Francis was also voted to the All-Freshman team for the AMC. Shawnee State forward Becky Babione has been voted the American Mideast Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year for 2008-09. She is one of four players from the league champion Bears to land a spot on the All-AMC Team. Babione, a six-foot senior from Fremont, Ohio, averaged 13.3 points and 9.4 rebounds per game for NAIA Division II No. 2 Shawnee State. She is joined on the All-AMC First Team by teammate Mallory Albers, a 5-7 junior guard. The only other school to secure two spots on the 10-member first team was Mount Vernon Nazarene with senior guard Rachel Fiely and sophomore center Amanda Himes earning spots. Also selected to the elite group were Sarah Bogardus (Daemen), Alison Lemon (Cedarville), Katie Berry (Walsh), Erin Farney (Roberts Wesleyan), Ashley Jackson (Northwestern Ohio), and Ashley Henderson (Point Park). Shawnee State's Kelly Wagner and Alison Meyer were named to the All-AMC Second Team. Rio Grande also had two players voted to the second unit in Jenna Smith and Sarah Drabinski. Robin Smith of Shawnee State was chosen AMC Coach of the Year by her peers. The Bears, 30-0 overall, waltzed through the conference schedule with a perfect 15-0 mark. Point Park's Ashley Henderson, a 5-10 sophomore guard, was recognized as the AMC Newcomer of the Year. Mount Vernon Nazarene's Alexis Harkins, a 5-10 guard/forward, is the AMC Freshmen of the Year. |
