The Lady Racers of UNOH were out for revenge of the Mt. Vernon Nazarene Cougars on Thursday evening at Racer Gymnasium. The game was a makeup from the scheduled December 15th contest that was postponed due to the winter weather. The Lady Racers put up a valiant effort against the 12-3 Cougars, but fell short 59-54. In their previous meeting, Mt. Vernon put it to the Racers 81-57. Clearly it was a different ballgame this time around. Things looked bleak at the beginning of the contest as the Lady Racers found themselves down 22-8 with 7 minutes remaining in the first half. In the next 3 minutes, UNOH would go on a 7-0 run to narrow the lead to 22-15. The Lady Racers fought back to go into the break trailing 25-17. The Lady Racers came out strong in the opening minutes of the second half as Mt. Vernon scored 2 first to make it a 10 point lead at 27-17, but with 2 3's from Andrea Meyer and an "And 1" by Krissy Koester, the Racers cut the lead to 27-26. The rest of the 2nd half saw a see-saw battle between the Cougars and the Lady Racers. The story of the night haunted the Lady Racers at the end of the game. The Cougars grabbed 24 offensive rebounds on the evening, which was 2 more than the Lady Racers had on both ends of the court. UNOH was outrebounded for the game 44-22. Being unable to gather key rebounds, the Lady Racers couldn't finish the upset of the Mt. Vernon Cougars. Leading the way for UNOH was Krissy Koester as she posted 14 points and 8 rebounds. Andrea Meyer hit 4 three pointers to give her 12 on the night. She was 4 of 5 from downtown. For the Cougars, Melissa Mastrodonato scored 15 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Kellie Jokela scored 11 points, and crashed the boards with 16. The loss moves the Lady Racers to 2-13, while the win moves the Cougars to 12-3. The Lady Racers will be back in action this Saturday, January 12th when they face Marygrove College at 3:00 PM. |
