The UNOH Racers finished their remarkable second season at 18-14, which is double from their first season as a basketball program. The Racers finished 9-4 in their first season as an American Mideast Conference member. The Racers accomplished many honors as a team, and on Wednesday, the Racers earned several individual honors to finish off their second season. Senior Jason Sarno, from Elida, OH, received First Team All-AMC Honors. Sarno graduates from UNOH scoring 933 points in his two year career. Junior Josh Vorst, from Ottoville, OH received Second Team All-AMC Honors. Vorst is the current leading scorer in a career for UNOH as in two years he has totaled 1,017 points. Sophomore Kyle Gillette, from Loudonville, OH, received Honorable Mention Honors from the AMC. Gillette led the Racers in rebounding during his Sophomore campaign and also recorded 7 double-doubles during the year. Freshman DeMarcus Jackson, from Columbus, OH, received AMC All-Freshman Team Honors. Senior forward Joe Shardo of co-champion Walsh University has been named the 2008-09 American Mideast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year in a vote by the league's coaches. Shardo, a 6-foot-5 native of Yorkshire, Ohio, was the top votegetter on the 10-member All-AMC First Team. He averages 18.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for the NAIA Division II No. 4 Cavaliers, 27-3 overall and 12-1 AMC, who head to the national tournament with a 15-game winning streak. Equally as impressive is the fact that Shardo was the AMC's leading scorer in conference play averaging 21.0 ppg. He was joined on the first team by younger brother, Jeremy. Mount Vernon Nazarene's Ben Falkenberg and Jadin Thomas earned spots on the top unit. Also selected to the All-AMC First Team were Yannick Anzuluni (Houghton), Brandon Ivery (Rio Grande), Daniel Rose (Cedarville), Eric Dummermuth (Notre Dame), Jason Sarno (Northwestern Ohio), and Ajay Rutledge (Daemen). Two schools each had two players named to the second team. Ricardo Alliman and Matt Harner represented Cedarville while Donald Suel and Bryan West were chosen from Ohio Dominican. First-year head coach Pat Estepp is the AMC Coach of the Year after leading No. 2 Cedarville to a share of the league crown. The Yellow Jackets are 27-3 and 12-1 AMC. Additionally, Dummermuth was the convincing choice for AMC Freshman of the Year. Rutledge was the AMC Newcomer of the Year. |
