The UNOH Racers looked to start a winning streak on Wednesday night as they hosted Goshen College. The Racers won their previous home game and were looking to make it two in a row for home victories. The Racers used excellent shooting of 64% from the field, to go along with Goshen's poor shooting of 31%, to pull off the upset of the 10-1 Goshen College Maple Leafs with a final score of 80-67. The game tipped off with the Racers taking control from the start. UNOH quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead. With the score being 9-4 with 15:00 minutes remaining in the first half, Josh Vorst ran off 6 consecutive points to push the lead up to 15-4. With 8:00 minutes remaining in the first half, the Racers went on another 7-0 run to extend the lead to 28-10. With 5:00 minutes left, the Goshen Maple Leafs experienced a technical by head coach Gary Chupp. Two minutes later, Goshen's Nate West received a technical followed by the ejection of coach Trupp after receiving his 2nd technical in the game. Before the first half ended, the Racers extended the lead to 31 points at 49-18. The 31 point lead was the highest of the season. The Maple Leafs cut the halftime lead to 49-24 at the break. The second half saw both teams shoot poor from the field as they matched each other with shooting 36% from the floor. The Maple Leafs slowly chipped away at the lead and cut the lead down to 10. Clutch free throw shooting down the stretch helped seal the 2nd victory in a row for the UNOH Racers. Leading the way for the Racers was Jason Sarno who logged his first double-double as a Racer. Sarno totaled 22 points and 10 rebounds. Sarno was also 12-12 from the free throw line. Josh Vorst scored 16 points in the contest, with 13 coming in the first half. Vorst also dished out 5 assists. Three other Racers reached double figures as Aaron Braun, Kyle Gillette, and Isaac Bowers all totaled 10 points. Gillette also grabbed 7 rebounds and swatted 4 blocks. Brandon Miller totaled 6 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists to provide an all-around attack. For the Maple Leafs, Errick McCollum (ranked 5th in scoring in NAIA Division II) completed a double-double also with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Nate West and Brice Hartman scored 11 points each to round out the double digit scoring for Goshen College. With the win, the Racers move to 3-9 on the season. The Goshen Maple Leafs fall to 10-2. The Racers will be back in action this weekend as they will take part in the Crusader Classic. The Racers will face the host Madonna University on Friday, December 14th, with tip set for 8:00 PM. The consolation game will start at 12:00 PM on Saturday with the championship game set for 2:00 PM. |
