The Goshen College men's basketball team needed some last-second dramatics to hand visiting University of Northwestern Ohio a 77-74 defeat at the Roman Gingerich Center Tuesday night, as senior Brice Hartman's three pointer with just .9 seconds remaining decided the outcome. Hartman's baseline bucket helped Goshen survive a game that boasted six ties and nine lead changes, as the visiting Racers were able to storm back from a 12-point deficit in the first half to make things overly interesting down the stretch. The Racers quickly jumped out to a 14-9 lead 5 minutes into the contest on consecutive 3 pointers by Isaac Bowers and Josh Vorst, who led the attack with 7 of the first 14 points. The game turned south quickly after that moment as the Leafs went on a 15-0 scoring spree to take a 24-14 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. UNOH quickly got it turned around and cut the lead back to 5 points by more scoring from Bowers and Vorst. The Racers once again fell into a hole as they went down 12 with 2 minutes remaing in the first half with the score being 40-28. Jason Sarno's layup with a minute left to go, cut the lead to 40-35 before Goshen's Brice Hartman made a jumper to put the halftime lead at 7 with the score being 42-35. The second half showed to be exciting from the get go as both teams battled early as the Racers fought to get back into the lead. Jason Sarno's three pointer with 12 minutes remaining in the game, gave the Racers their first lead since early in the first half. The Racers found themselves down 7 again with 8 minutes to go in the contest. Sophomore Marcus Addy rattled off 4 consecutive points in an effort to help cut the lead down to 1 before a layup by Josh Vorst with 5 minutes left to go gave the Racers their final lead of the night. Aaron Braun drained a jumper with 1:33 left in the contest, before both teams had a posession and faield to connect. The Leafs had the final possession in the game and they used all :29 seconds in the possession to the fullest. With .9 seconds left, Hartman drained a three from the corner to send UNOH to their 5th loss on the young season. Leading the way for the Racers was Josh Vorst with 18 points. Aaron Braun recorded his first double-double as a UNOH Racer with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jason Sarno also had 12 points and Isaac Bowers had 11. The Racers for the first time this season shot over 50% from the field. The loss drops the Racers to 0-5 and the Goshen Maple Leafs rise to 7-1. The Racers will be back in action Friday and Saturday, November 23 and 24 as the Racers will compete in the Ohio Dominican University Tournament. The Racers will face Ohio Dominican on Friday night at 8:00 PM. The consolation game will start at 6:00 PM on Saturday with the championship set for 8:00 PM. |
