LIMA – It was a big night for University of Northwestern Ohio Athletics on Wednesday. Not only did the basketball teams win thrilling games over Cornerstone University, but Racers fans were introduced to Torque, the mascot of UNOH Athletics.

LIMA - The University of Northwestern Ohio is the recipient of the Champions of Character 5-Star Institution Award from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. To receive the award, members must score 60 or more points on the NAIA Champions of Character Scorecard. Institutions were measured based on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character and earned points in each of the following categories: character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition, and character promotion. Institutions also earned points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by obtaining zero ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.

LIMA - The University of Northwestern Ohio had a great week last week, and it showed when the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Players of the Week were announced Monday.

Lauren Maxwell was named the Volleyball Player of the Week, and Keith Long was named the Men's Golfer of the Week. It's first time this season UNOH has had multiple players selected as Player of the Week in the same period.

[UNOH] UNOH hires Stuart Gore at women's soccer coach

LIMA - Reading over Stuart Gore's resume is impressive to say the least, and now he gets to add another line as the first head coach of the women's soccer program at the University of Northwestern Ohio. Gore was offered the job by UNOH Director of Athletics Chris Adams on Tuesday and formally accepted the position on Wednesday.

"To start a program from scratch was a massive draw," Gore said. "Looking into what (UNOH men's soccer coach) Gavin (Oldham) did in building a new program, I felt it was just time. It is a great opportunity to put your stamp on something and build something from the ground up."

Ty Dillon, driver of the No. 3 truck in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and sponsored by the University of Northwestern Ohio, is up for Most Popular Driver on the series, and you can do your part to help Ty win the award.

Head over to http://www.nascar.com/ncwtsmpd/ to cast your vote for Ty. In 19 starts this year, Ty has one win, six top-5 finishes and 16 top-10s. His average finish was 7.3 and he won $338, 455 in race winnings.

[UNOH] Volleyball to host pediatric cancer benefit match

LIMA - The University of Northwestern Ohio has joined with Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus to put together a pediatric cancer benefit during the Lady Racers home volleyball match on Wednesday, Sept. 19. The Lady Racers host UM-Dearborn at 7 p.m., but activities begin at 6 p.m. All money raised during the match will go directly to Nationwide for pediatric cancer research.

The second season of baseball at the University of Northwestern Ohio begins this weekend with a pair of double headers Saturday and Sunday at Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee.

The Racers finished their inaugural season 20-28 overall and 11-10 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. They finished the season strong, going 5-2.

LIMA - The plaque was in his hands and the ceremony 10 minutes behind him, yet Franklin Harris still couldn't believe he was inducted into the University of Northwestern Ohio Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday.

[UNOH] WHAC expands to 12 teams

There are two more teams to keep track of in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. The WHAC has approved two teams for membership beginning in July, Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Mich., and Marygrove College, in Detroit. They will begin a full conference schedule in the 2012-13 season.
