LIMA - The University of Kansas men's bowling team and the Wright State University women's team took the checkered flags in the varsity division of the 2012 Storm UNOH Racers Kick-Off Classic, held at Westgate and Northland Lanes in Lima this past weekend. The Wright State women and Notre Dame College of Ohio men took wins in the junior varsity division.
After of 2 days of fierce competition, the field was cut to the top three teams in four divisions.
In the men's two-game varsity semifinal match, Morehead State defeated Urbana 427-383 to advance to the finals against No. 1-seed Kansas. The Jayhawks then topped the Eagles 426-406 to take home the $2,000 top prize. Morehead took home a check for $1500, and Urbana earned $1000. Also, the varsity team from Notre Dame College of Ohio earned $500 for finishing fourth, one place out of the cut to the finals.
For the women's varsity division, the defending champion UNOH Lady Racers fell by a mere 18 pins to Wright State in the semifinals 374-356. Wright State then advanced to meet the defending collegiate national champions Webber International. The Raiders prevailed in this matchup 407-361, taking home the $2,000 top prize. Webber International earned $1,500, UNOH earned $1,000, and Notre Dame College of Ohio earned $500.
In the JV matchups for the men, Notre Dame College took home the top prize of $1,000 by beating another team from their school in the finals 407-351. The second place Notre Dame team defeated Saginaw Valley in the semifinals 420-371.
Women's JV found Wright State coming out on top with the $1,000, defeating the Lady Racers 391-278 in the finals. UNOH got to the finals by defeating Notre Dame College of Ohio 371-279 in the semifinals.
Brock Finch from Urbana led men's individual averages with an impressive 241, first place out of 167 bowlers, while Shayna Kanemoto led the ladies with a 217 average, first place out of 88 bowlers.
The top Racers for the men were Charles Fella (13th place) with a 224 average, Taylor Booth (27th) with a 216, and Toby James (30th) with a 215.
The top UNOH women were Olivia King (2nd) with a 207 average, Samantha Dudley (5th) with a 204, and Crystal Boyer (8th) with a 196. King and Dudley also earned new Storm bowling balls for finishing on the All-Tournament Team by being in the top-5 individual averages.
The Racers next tournament will be at AMF Bowlero Lanes in Wauwatosa, Wis., on October 6 and 7.
