GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - There was a lot of tennis for Daniel Rueda since Thursday, and it ended with a first for a University of Northwestern Ohio tennis player. Rueda battled his way through the bracket at the ITA Regional Tournament, winning the men's singles title on Saturday.
Rueda is the first UNOH tennis player to win the tournament. He advances to the NAIA Small College Championships from October 13-16 in Mobile, Alabama.
Rueda and his older brother Gustavo Rueda also advanced deep into the doubles tournament, going all the way into the semifinals Saturday before falling.
On the women's side, the doubles team of Shaleigh McClintock and Shaye Warman survived into the semifinals of the tournament before coming up short on Saturday.
Daniel Rueda won his semifinal match 6-1, 6-3 over Aquinas College's Kristov Saari. Then the second-seeded Rueda met the top-seeded Aaron Hendrick of Aquinas in the finals; Rueda clawed his way to a 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 13-11 in the final. The final match was the first time in the tournament Rueda had been pushed past two sets.
