ALLENTOWN - The 2012 season for the University of Northwestern Ohio High Performance Motorsports Team got off to a strong start, but the icing on the cake will have to wait another week as rain forced the postponement of the feature races until next Friday, April 27.
The Racers entered two modified cars in the K&N UMP Modified roster and four stock cars in the Budweiser Thunderstocks race. All six cars had qualified for the feature races, and the modifieds had just made it onto the racing surface before track officials pulled them off and eventually made the decision to run double features next week.
Kody Weisner, the senior most driver, was impressive in his No. 00 modified car, leading half of the eight laps in his heat race. Weisner had taken over the lead when he dipped low in turn two on the third lap, but he was overtaken by former track champion Terry Hull on the seventh lap. Weisner finished second to Hull.
In his first competition in a modified, Ryan O'Dette failed to qualify for the feature from his heat race after getting tangled up in a wreck in turn three. O'Dette overcame two unfortunate spins in the B-Main to make a top-5 finish and earn a spot in the feature.
Weisner will start the feature on the outside of the third row, and O'Dette will start on the inside of the last row.
The four stock car teams feature all rookie team members, crew chiefs and drivers, but the quartet of cars didn't show any nerves or rookie mistakes. Dwight Neihoff qualified for the feature with a second-place finish in the third heat race, and teammates Brent Weaver, Shane Wolf and Brad Kemp also qualified for the feature out of the second heat race.
