MOUNT VERNON - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball team went on a 16-5 run to end the first half and the Cougars held on for an 81-73 win in the season opener for both schools.

Johnny Elliott led the Racers with 22 points on 9-of-18 field goal shooting. He added four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Jake Bolyard added 18 points, making 4-of-8 3-pointers, adding a team-high eight rebounds. He scored 15 points in the second half.

Also reaching double figures for UNOH (0-1) were Dustin Guthrie (13 points, two blocks) and Drew Moore (10 points).

The Racers were out-shot at the free throw line, making 8-of-17 to 23-of-27 for the Cougars (1-0).

UNOH next faces the University of Toledo at 7 p.m. Thursday in an exhibition game at Savage Hall.
