The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference will be nine strong when the 2010-11 school year begins as presidents of current member schools unanimously voted the University of Northwestern Ohio into membership
Located in Lima, Ohio, the private school has an average enrollment of more than 4,500. It's committment to academics first is a perfect fit for the conference. The mission of the University is to prepare students for careers and productive citizenship that encompass the business, professional, corporate and technological communities by providing quality education and training in response to the needs and aspirations of constituents.
"We look forward to being a partner with the WHAC and its member institutions," said Dr. Jeffrey Jarvis, president of Northwestern Ohio. "The quality of academics, facilities and athletics is a natural fit for UNOH."
UNOH has been a member of the American Mideast Conference since it resumed athletics in 2007 after competing at the junior college level. Currently the school offers seven varsity sports with plans to add an eighth sport for the WHAC schedule. UNOH sponsors three men sports - basketball, tennis and golf and has constructed a baseball facility for an eventual team in 2011. Basketball, volleyball, golf and tennis are offered for the women.
In addition to the above NAIA sports, the school offers coed cheerleading (an emerging sport in the NAIA) and motorsports, hence the nickname Racers.
"The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference is proud to welcome the University of Northwestern Ohio to our family," said Andy Jugan, commissioner of the conference. "The values and standards the University instills solidifies the conference as a high-quality conference."
With UNOH sponsoring tennis as a WHAC sport, the conference will have enough teams to qualify as a conference for national championship qualification instead of competing as independents.
"The move to the WHAC will not only enhance Northwestern Ohio's ability to become a prominent school in the NAIA, but will also allow the school to maximize our geographical presences in the tri-state area," stated
Chris Adams, UNOH athletics director.
UNOH will join fellow conference members Aquinas College, Concordia University, Cornerstone University, Davenport University, Indiana Institute of Technology, Madonna University, University of Michigan-Dearborn and Siena Heights.
