LIMA, Ohio – In the first contest of 2017, the University of Northwestern Ohio women's basketball team hosted the Lourdes University Gray Wolves for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup in The Garage on Wednesday night.
The Racers (7-10, 5-4 WHAC) sprinted to a 10-0 start at the 6:29 mark before claiming a 22-5 lead through the first quarter thanks to a high-pressure defense which saw UNOH record 11 of its 16 steals. UNOH never trailed Lourdes (5-12, 3-6) as the Racers picked up the victory, 71-59.
Sogona Sidibe and Keundra Cox led the balanced attack with 10 points each while Sidibe pulled down six rebounds. Linda Ulasi, Luisa Smith, and Shatisha Dukes matched Sidibe's rebound mark to lead the team. Dukes also provided issues for the Gray Wolves as she recorded a trio of blocked shots while Smith grabbed five steals.
Daja Whiteside posted a game-high 16 points for Lourdes.
As a team, UNOH outshot Lourdes with a 49.2 percent performance from the field compared to the Gray Wolves' 31.7 percent outing. The largest lead for the Racers was 37-7 with 5:34 on the clock in the second quarter.
The Racers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 7 as UNOH visits Ft. Wayne, Ind. to take on the Indiana Tech Warriors in another WHAC contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 PM.
