DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – For the University of Northwestern Ohio men's soccer team, missed first half opportunities against the University of Texas at Brownsville proved too much to overcome in their NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship semifinal.

The Racers (17-5-1) missed a pair of great chances in the opening half, and just after halftime, Texas Brownsville (24-0) scored what proved to be the game winning goal on their way to a 3-1 win that sent the Ocelots to the Championship Final while ending the Racers' season.

"I couldn't be prouder of a group of gentlemen," remarked head coach Gavin Oldham in the moments following the match. "They really are a class act, and we really deserved more tonight, but that's what the game we love serves up sometimes. We have a special group here and I am happy to have the honor of being called their coach."

UTB broke the ice in the ninth minute of action when Carlos Acevedo rifled a pass from Ricardo Diegues into the bottom left corner of the goal, giving the Ocelots the 1-0 lead. For much of the remainder of the first period, however, it was the Racers who were in control. UNOH out-shot UTB 11-4 in the first frame, and in the 30th minute, the Racers were rewarded with a penalty after an Ocelot player committed a handball in the box. Sergio Royo converted the PK for his 16th goal of the season – tying him for the team lead with Pascal Debowiak –  but at intermission, the score remained 1-1.

The Ocelots needed just 28 seconds of play in the second half, taking advantage of a broken play to take the lead back on a goal from Ahmed Zaky that made the score 2-1. The momentum turned further in favor of UTB in the 52nd minute, when Carlos Suarez was sent off for the Racers, leaving UNOH down a man with 38:54 left. The Racers pushed forward valiantly, but the Ocelots packed in the defense, and in the 80th minute, UTB countered quickly and Diegues put the game away with a goal to provide the final margin of 3-1.

Samuel Haggbring (1-1-1) took the tough-luck loss in goal for the Racers, making one save in the match.

The loss ends the Racers' season, along with the careers of seniors Luke Guy and Travin Cain.
